This is one of the best Vintage Crochet Dresses I've seen. It has the most wonderful holey design and has dramatic bell sleeves. Hand crocheted from super soft mohair in a fabulous coral orange. Shown worn over a contrasting black slip. Vintage 70s. Made in Dublin Ireland.

One of my favorite pieces in the store right now is this fabulous op art print maxi dress. Actually a 70s nightgown, yeah that's right, vintage 70s sleepwear from Kayser! A modern Fashionista could certainly get a lot of mileage out of this piece by wearing it out as the grooviest dress ever. Made from silky nylon tricot in a checkboard print gone mad.

I just saw Xanadu for the first time last night. When this movie came out in 1980 I remember my little sister loving it ( one of her other favs at the time was The Pirate Movie ), but Olivia Newton John made me gag and had no interest in seeing it. Originally intended to be a low budget roller disco pic it evolved into a big budget musical and was a great big flop. It's a terrible movie, still it's loads of fun to watch if only for the costumes. It's such a mish mash of big band and disco, 80s big hair and slutty dance costumes, roller disco flash mixed with 40s style hair and big shoulders.

Designers, and Marc Jacobs in particular is showing 70s inspired looks for Spring so since I've always loved authentic 70s fashion so much I thought I'd show some of my favorite pieces that exhibit trademark 70s glam style.

Maxi lengths are hot whether it be skirts or pants!

Sheer and floaty floor dragging maxi skirt in mint green and silver lurex - this skirt is new old stock from Koret of Califonia. I also have a fabulous pair of pallazo pants in this set as well as two matching tops.

Extra wide bell bottom pallazo pants:
I adore the bold brown and white checkerboard print on this slinky jersey pants

And here shown with a matching top; although I will be the first to admit that you have to have some moxie to pull off wearing this much checked pattern, but if you do it's lots of fun!

While the red leather shorts and belt are 80s, not 70s, the beret and modernist red enamel necklace definitely are 70s glam.

Snow Dwelling Gnomes

It snowed today so most of the businesses downtown were shutting down early so I have the rare luxury of a Monday afternoon off. Victoria BC is always pretty silly whenever it snows more than an inch of two. Half the vehicles do not have snow tires, so there are accidents everywhere and it's utter chaos on the roads until it melts.

When I arrived at home I was charmed by two snow covered cement garden gnomes that are sitting at the base of my garden stairs. They are a couple of my Husband's salvaged finds and are pretty shabby with chippy paint and missing limbs and are two projects on my endless "to do" list. I had the sudden urge to run and get my camera and take a few shots around my garden; it was such a lovely site.

2 handsome but rather shabby vintage gnomes. And the round lump in front is a cement toadstool, also on the "to do" list.

A previously restored and repainted gnome but you can see his paint is already chipping a little. Even with a good outdoor sealer the paint never lasts more than a couple of seasons in the salty sea air and rain of Vancouver Island.

While I do think a woman can never have too many sexy black slips, and there is certainly a place in the world for neutral shades like white, cream and tan, it's the ones in pretty or unusual colors that sell out the fastest.
This very very sheer nylon full slip is in the wierdest shade of pink; kinda salmon, kinda coral and I love the contrast with the ecru lace. Vintage 60s, Size 40 bust.

Fabulous glossy nylon in a gorgeous shade of plum. This vintage half slip is anything by ordinary. Note the incredible cut up to there side slits, Flair, Petite, also has ILGWU label.

This lacy half slip has been custom tie dyed in the most vivid shade of purple.

What to Wear to Your Holiday Party: Vintage Beaded Tops

Back in the 50s and 60s the most marvelous beaded knits were coming out of Hong Kong which was then a British Crown Colony. These pieces were extremely well made usually of 100% virgin wool and hand beaded in lavish designs. The embellishments were expensive glass and novelty beads and sparkly sequins. Almost always we will find the tops were fully lined in silk or acetate so they are very comfortable to wear.

The beaded tanks tops are very popular for Holiday cocktail parties but the real beauty of these pieces is they can easily be dressed up or down. Here are some lovely examples we've recently added to Empress Jade Vintage on Etsy.

Update on IMS Fotografix Photoshoot

What a lot of work prepping and dragging all my clothes and accessories to Ian's ( IMS FotoGrafix ) home based photography studio, in the pouring rain no less. I've only got a few edited shots but it looks like it's been worth it. It's a luxury to have a professional photographer instead of my usual makeshift set up.

I was trying to prep the clothes and get set up while the models were getting their makeup done and Ian was setting up, but I did manage to take a couple of quick shots while we were working.

When I sell vintage lingerie it's always the fancy pieces or the ones in the brightest, wildest colors that sell out first. I've also had an excellent response to our specialty line of Empress Jade's tie dyed vintage slips. These are bold and sexy with groovy patterns and super saturated colors. I'm Back! And some cool pictures of the hotrods of Northwest Duece Days

Just over a month and not a single blog post! I've taken some time off to enjoy the summer; going to the beach, organic gardening and partaking of the many summer festivals and events that are held every year in Victoria, BC. Today the hubby and I went to Northwest Duece Days in the inner harbour. Even if you are not a vintage car nut like my husband it's a blast to see so many cool cars in one place. Amazing hotrods with thousands of hours (and even more dollars) spent getting them to show condition. This year had 900 cars from all over North America with an emphasis on "Deuces" (1932 Fords) with lots of other antique cars on show.

It was so crowded it was difficult to get good pictures of my favorites, but here is a sampling!

Vintage Luxite by Holeproof Lingerie

Vanity Fair and Van Raalte get all the glory.... now don't get me wrong I adore both of these lingerie manufacturers but one of my favorites is Luxite.

Luxite by Holeproof is seriously underated, and deserves to be in every lingerie collectors closet.

Like most lingerie companies they started off by manufacturing silk hosiery.

Vintage 40s and 50s nylon blouses.

After WWII when the restrictions on nylon were lifted, manufacturers quickly started selling the loveliest blouses. Most often they were very very sheer nylon and were intended to be worn over the pretty new nylon slips and camisoles that were suddenly available. The late 40s and early 50s nylon blouses often have rhinestone buttons and lots of ruffles or other pleated details.

Modern women rarely don a veil unless it's their wedding day, but vintage lovers know that a little sheer net tilted over the eyes can add some allure to an otherwise boring outfit.

One of my favorite lingerie manufacturers, Van Raalte, got their start making the most incredible veiling. Just check out the delicate spider web veil in this vintage 1918 Van Raalte ad, titiled "Miss-Chif". This vintage ad is for sale by TimeBeforeThis on Ebay

1920 "Where concealment is beauty's revealment"

An amazing, Van Raalte Veil ad from 1921. This exotic design was probably inspired by 1921's blockbuster film, "The Sheik", staring Rudi Valentino.

One Day I am Going to Learn How to Crochet

My Mom found some great vintage 70s Vogue craft books which I have now got up for sale at EmpressPatterns on Etsy. My favorite is this Vogue Guide to Crochet which is a hardcover printed in 1972. I keep flipping through it and had a tough time putting it up for sale. It's really got some amazing patterns; alas I do not crochet.... YET!

The designs are iconic 70s fashion, but they have stood the test of time and could easily be worn today.

My favorite has to be this romantic empire wedding dress: the crochet is so lacy and those huge bell sleeves are to die for! Make it up with a short skirt and it would make a kick-ass mini dress.

Vintage Clothing Ebay Auctions

Is Bonanzle a Good Place to Sell Vintage Clothes?

Bonanzle, aka "the Ranch" is a relatively new site which is getting a lot of press lately. As of this morning Bonanzle has 245381 users and growing fast. They are branding themselves as the newest Ebay alternative and have stressed the easy listing process and the fact that selling is free or cheap. My searches turned up very few vintage clothing sellers; when I searched "vintage dress" it brought up only 520 listings. So why am I bothering? Listing is FREE with a basic account and final value fees very reasonable, so I though it wouldn't hurt to test the waters. I'm still figuring everything out, so I will update in a month to let you know how it's working out over there.

Free Vintage 50s Prom Party Dress

Like most vintage clothing sellers I have a repair basket overflowing with vintage clothing and sometimes I'll spend an afternoon restitching hems and sewing on buttons. Generally I shy away from buying anything needing serious work because it just doesn't pay as a dealer to spend too much time fixing things up unless they are extra special. I've been hanging onto this lovely 50s strapless party dress for ages because it's so beautiful, but it does need some lovin. I just simply do not have the time to fix it up, so I've decided to give it away.

The Good News:
It's a authentic vintage 50s prom dress in rose satin acetate and tulle. A boned strapless bodice with pleated tulle bust with a silver edged frill. Metal side zipper. No tags.

Measurements:
Length 44 inches
Bust 32 inches
Waist 25 inches
Hips 40 inches
For reference our model has a 34" bust, 25" waist. We could get the dress zipped up but it was very snug.

The Bad News:
Looks lovely as you can see but this dress needs some work. Clean with no stains but satin lining has some fade or color loss in sections... can't really be seen because it's covered in tulle. Some holes in tulle and side seam of skirt is coming apart... could be repaired. Needs a new zipper.

Faster, Pussycat, Kill! Kill!

I've been on a 60s movie kick lately, and I just watched Russ Meyer's 1965 cult classic; Faster Pussycat, Kill!, Kill!. A "sexploitation" film featuring cool cars, nasty women, sexy costumes and campy dialogue.

Varla (played by Tura Satana) : " I never try anything. I just do it. Wanna try me?"
Varla is the karate chopping, ass kicking, switchblade throwing leader of the trio of fast driving, murdering go-go dancers.

Rosie (played by Haji) : " We don't like anything soft. Everything we do is hard."
Rosie has the hots for Varla and speaks in a smooth as butter, fake Italiano accent.

Billie (played by Lori Williams): "I'm of legal age for whiskey, voting and loving. Now the next election is two years away, and my love life ain't getting much better, so how about some of that one-hundred-percent!"
Billie is all about sex and pleasure with no restraints.

Although relegated to cheap grindhouse theatres in the 60s this movie has stood the test of time. Declared by John Waters to be his favorite movie of all time. There were also rumours floating around a couple of years ago about a Quenton Tarantino remake starring Brittany Spears of all people. Definitely worth seeing.

Irma La Douce

I just saw the 1963, Billy Wilder movie Irma la Douce for the first time last night and now I'm trying to figure out how to dye my bras and stockings green! Staring Shirley Maclaine and Jack Lemmon it's the story of a Paris streetwalker, Irma "The Sweet" and a rookie cop who falls in love with her. Love, comedy, Paris and great costumes!

I searched the internet in vain trying to find a photo of the Paris loft apartment and delightful painted wrought iron bed. These fun portraits of Shirley (and doggy) show a similar all white bed in the background.

I'll let you know how my green dyed stocking turn out :)

How I pick vintage fashion for my store

I guess if you look at the overall flavour of my store, Empress Jade Vintage, you will find lots of super bright colors, bold designs, and flamboyant details. It's not to say that there aren't any classic pieces in there, but to be honest one of the reasons I like vintage fashion is the theatricality of it. I never could personally commit to collecting only one specific era. I love the elegance of the 30s and 40s, but it's also fun to put on some crazy 70s polyester print or wear something truly avant garde from the 80s. The stock in the store is 100% a reflection of my own personal taste, so I thought it would be fun to show why I picked these items:

I like plush textures and I adore really fluffy angora:

This cropped 80s sweater (size M to XL) has some of the longest and fluffiest angora I've seen and I love the pop of the graphic black and white. Shown with a 80s high waisted leather pencil skirt (size small) and silver tone chain belt.

I love bold prints:

This 60s cropped jacket (size small) has such a fun eyepopping abstract print. Shown here with a vintage red slip, but I think it would be even better worn with a simple white tank and capris.

Draping and fluidity:

There is a lovely feminine drape on this 60s chiffon robe by Gotham and the sheer fabric is really used to great effect with the billowing sleeves.

I would wear this out as a layering piece over jeans or a slip dress.

I love color!

Especially rich saturated tones or unusual shade variations. The hottest hot pink chiffon contrasts so wonderfully with the frilly white lace on this cute 60s babydoll nighty robe set (size Medium)

There is nothing more disappointing than finding an uber cool pair of late 60s or early 70s go go boots and then realizing the vinyl is disintegrating and turning all sticky and gross! April 1st Fools and Fish

I was hunting through Etsy this morning and came across some lovely Antique, French, April 1st postcards all showing ladies and girls and holding fish. How bizare? I have never heard of the significance of fish and April 1st before, so I did some digging.

Poisson d’avril literally means April Fish in French. In France (and apparently some parts of Quebec, although I've never seen it here), children play a game where they run around trying to pin paper fish on peoples backs without getting caught. After trolling the internet I haven't been able to find any satisfactory answer as to how the fish reference came about.

Ultra sheer fabrics, lotsa lace, whispy tap pants, bras and corsets worn on top of sheer blouses, and mini length sheer crinoline skirts. It's a great look on the runway and in a fashion editorial but how does this translate into the real world? I love how this woman pairs a vintage slip over a modern T-shirt and boots.

It's very soft and romantic but still has a bit of an edge. Super easy and comfortable too.

LoveMaegan from Chictopia wears a vintage 40s slip bloused over a belt to make it shorter. The fitted modern blazer and gladiator sandals make it modern.

Etsy Artist Spotlight: Nevita

Well I've decided to ignore the fact that it snowed today and pretend it's already Spring! After being spoiled with possibly the mildest Winter ever, today I was brought back to reality with nasty bloody snow..... not much, but enough to knock the blossoms off the Japanese plum trees and now my daffodils are shredded. WTF?!
If a never ending Winter is getting you down, cheer up with this charming Bulgarian tradition to celebrate Spring courtesy of Nevita

Martenitsa are adorable red and white yarn decorations worn tied around the wrist or pinned on your clothes from March 1 until the end of March (or the first time you see a stork or a budding tree).
Bulgarians exchange and wear white and red tassels or small dolls called Pizho and Penda. In Bulgarian folklore the name Baba Marta (meaning Grandma March) is related to a grumpy old lady whose mood swings change very rapidly. The old Pagan belief is that by wearing the red and white colours of the martenitsa, and asking Baba Marta for mercy you would make Winter pass faster and hasten Spring. Many people wear more than one martenitsa. They receive them as presents from relatives, close friends and colleagues.
The stork is considered a harbinger of spring and as evidence that Baba Marta is in a good mood and is about to retire.

The Sexy But Ladylike Slip

If I do say so myself, Empress Jade Vintage consistently offers one of the nicest selections of vintage slips in Vintageland. Out of all the possible vintage undergarments the simple full slip seems the most versatile. You can wear it as it was designed; as a layer under your dress, to smooth the line and prevent show through. Or you could wear one as a saucy little nightgown. However modern girls are just as likely to throw on some heels and wear Grandmas full slip out as a dress. In the past I have mostly used my trusty 3/4 mannequin to model my vintage lingerie but lately I've been experimenting with more live model photoshoots. Let me know what you think!

Having recently returned from a Caribbean vacation I am well aware of the difficulty of trying to find vacation clothes at this time of year. The malls are full of the dregs of the post Xmas clearance racks and haven't yet started to bring in the Spring & Summer stock. If you are lucky enough to find any cruise wear it tends to be extremely over priced and always seems somewhat matronly to me. Crazy Busy so just a little peek at some vintage slips

I've been busy trying to reorganize all my stock so my poor Husband can manage my mail outs when I take off on a little cruise on Jan 12th. I've never really had a proper inventory system for all my vintage stuff... I just kinda know where everything is. Normally when we take a Holiday together I just shut down the store until I return, but this time he's staying behind since it's a girl's only vacation. David is reasonably savvy when it some to women's vintage clothing but I still don't trust him to tell one little black dress apart from another. So what this means is I've given every item a unique inventory # and now I'm in the process of tagging and organizing everything. A HUGE job, but hopefully this will make it impossible for any screw-ups.
