In the late 60s and early 70s, Vancouver Island and especially the smaller Gulf Islands off Canada's Pacific Coast were a haven for American's dodging the draft and Hippies just wanting to escape. So I'm always surprised that I rarely find really cool hippie era clothes here, you would think there would be lots of stuff sitting in closets just waiting to be rediscovered... perhaps they just wore their favorites to shreads??? So I was delighted when I found an authentic
Char hand painted leather vest last week and in perfect condition no less.
Sexy corset ties in front and whip stitched leather seams with gorgeous hand painted flowers.

Note that the tag is even handmade - way cool!

I was pretty confident it was authentic late 60s or very early 70s, but since this was the first vintage Char I had ever found I did a little research before I put it up for sale.
Turns out Char de Vazquez is an American designer who went to Guadalajara Mexico in the late 60s and started producing exquisite hand painted and leather patchwork clothes and accessories. Rumour has it things really took off after she took her wares to Woodstock! By 1976 she had 150 employees and an entire town hand painting leathergoods. Soon after (approx 1977) the Mexican business died when Char divorced her husband and moved back to Sante Fe. She then started a new company based out of New Mexico with her sister - Char and Sher Designs. However, it is her early, made in Mexico apparel that is sought out by collectors. These pieces have incredible hand work and iconic style.
