I had so much fun at my latest photoshoot. Two sisters, Keri and Chelsey did a joint photo session for Empress Jade Vintage. Today I'll show you some of the shots of Chelsey, as you can see she's just lovely and really rocked the vintage.

The Pin-up Art of Gil Elvgren

I just treated my husband to the book "Gil Elvgren The Complete Pin-ups" by Charles G. Martignette and Lousis K. Meisel, published in 1999 by Taschen. I can happily recommend this book to anyone interested in pin-up illustration. Gil Elvgren is probably the World's best known pin-up artist and was quite prolific as his career spanned from the late 30s to the 70s. This book contains absolutely tons of beautiful pictures spanning his career. The quintessential American pin-up girl is curvaceous, but still wholesome... and usually the pictures rely on naughty doggies or happy accidents as a device to show some skin. These are just a small sample of the pictures in this book.

This one's caption is a little creepy
"September check-ups are the way
To keep yourself in shape
But too many cooks can spoil the broth,
And too many Doctors - - gape. "

Yellow

I took this quick photo of some daffodils in my front yard because they look like they're fading and I'm always sad when they're gone. I love daffodils, especially the classic yellow varieties because they look so perky!

Yellow is so sunny, its just one of those happy colors, but it is sometimes challenging to wear the brighter shades. If you want to incorporate yellow into your wardrobe it's important to consider your complexion... in general if you have a yellow or olive undertone to your skin you will need to me more careful in choosing the right shade. Blonds with blue eyes look wonderful in soft yellow shades, while redheads may prefer to stay with golden tones that have a touch of red in them. If you are blessed with dark hair and skin without any sallowness you can wear the brightest and sunniest hues of yellow with great style.

This could have been worn to Woodstock!

In the late 60s and early 70s, Vancouver Island and especially the smaller Gulf Islands off Canada's Pacific Coast were a haven for American's dodging the draft and Hippies just wanting to escape. So I'm always surprised that I rarely find really cool hippie era clothes here, you would think there would be lots of stuff sitting in closets just waiting to be rediscovered... perhaps they just wore their favorites to shreads??? So I was delighted when I found an authentic Char hand painted leather vest last week and in perfect condition no less.

Sexy corset ties in front and whip stitched leather seams with gorgeous hand painted flowers.

Note that the tag is even handmade - way cool!

I was pretty confident it was authentic late 60s or very early 70s, but since this was the first vintage Char I had ever found I did a little research before I put it up for sale.

Turns out Char de Vazquez is an American designer who went to Guadalajara Mexico in the late 60s and started producing exquisite hand painted and leather patchwork clothes and accessories. Rumour has it things really took off after she took her wares to Woodstock! By 1976 she had 150 employees and an entire town hand painting leathergoods. Soon after (approx 1977) the Mexican business died when Char divorced her husband and moved back to Sante Fe. She then started a new company based out of New Mexico with her sister - Char and Sher Designs. However, it is her early, made in Mexico apparel that is sought out by collectors. These pieces have incredible hand work and iconic style.
